Welcome to the Worldwide Wendish Connection online forum/message board! Please take a few minutes of your time to introduce yourself to the group, you can be as detailed as you like. As for me, my name is Ronald Schatte. I am a descendant of the 1854 Wendish emigration to Texas aboard the White Star Line's packet ship the Ben Nevis. My direct connection to those original Wends is my 'Schatte' name that is found on the ship's register, specifically Christoph and Rosina Schatte. I am interested in learning Upper Sorbian as well as Lower Sorbian. I have never visited the land of my ancestors but hope to do so in the next couple of years.

Ron, The web site looks gorgeous and I know it will get even better as time goes on. I think we have needed something just like this for some time and am thrilled that you are off to such a good start! I am a coordinator for the Iowa Wends, and will be happy to share information and help any researchers, who are trying to learn about their family histories. Hi Ron! It's great to see The Worldwide Wendish Connection back and ready to rock! It must be tough, being there on Mars. We miss you! Don't be a stranger, Wandering Wend. And be sure to visit and participate at the new TWHS website, The Wendish Research Exchange ( WendishResearch.org ). You can join the efforts there by visiting ResearchProject.info. There is plenty of room for everyone! If you'd like my help around here, all you need to do is ask.

Hi my name is Mark Alan Stempel. My great-great grandfather was Christian Wilhelm Stempel who immigrated to the US in 1847, becoming I believe the first Wendish immigrant to Iowa. Would love to learn more about the Wendish peoples and any relevant information related to my great-great grandfather. I am planning on a visit to Drachhausen this summer 2013.

Hi Mark! Per George Nielsen: "Probably, the first person from Drachhausen to settle in southeastern Iowa was Christian Wilhelm Stempel. He also could well claim the honors of being the first Wend to migrate to United States. Although Drachhausen was largely Wendish, Stempel, a physician, was most likely well familiar with German society, having participated in the Napoleonic wars. He owned land near Drachhausen and migrated in 1847. Stempel also took with him a resident from Drachhausen who worked for him as a carpenter. In the years that followed more members of his family and other Wends crossed the Atlantic for Iowa." You can find this at: wendishresearch.org/blog_nielsen/?e=16Hi my name is Mark Alan Stempel.
